Chest pounding action with suprisingly restrained Bayism

The beginning was restless for the wrong reasons, everyone was chatting and doing stuff I could not follow. There's also a fair dose of Bay kitsch en patriotism, albeit less than I expected. But it's still an intense adrenaline rush - so much so that I had trouble falling asleep afterwards.

Bizarre, they way some like it

A little slowish perhaps, but pleasantly bizarre, strange and filthy in true Cronenberg style.

A tough but rewarding watch

A painful and depressing movie for sure, but I like how the way various layers of the story unveil. And just when I started wondering if there would be any redemption to all the suffering, comes a reveal that magically makes the whole thing become coherent, satisfying and even... beautiful?

Blood, horror, and torture: at least I warned you

Lots of blood, torture and some horror elements in a movie that you will probably still remember years from now, but whish you wouldn't.

Varied, interesting and entertaining

A well-rounded and well made movie that has a little bit of everything, and remains fresh by taking multiple new directions. I liked it, but do not fully feel the 'masterpiece' status it has. People applaud it's 'social commentary' - but if they mean rich and poor - then well duh.

Remarkable

About 90% of the movie is romantic drama leading up to the infamous 10% of painful torture. If you didn't know about this finale, I suspect some might wonder where this movie is going and what it is about. But as it is, the combination makes for an intriguing and remarkable movie.

Flawed but effective war action

I thought the main hero was a bit of a dissonant cardboard pretty boy, and the uninterested, TV watching ground support team was just preposterous. Other that that, it still is a tense, heart pounding movie, in a way that only war movies seem to tickle me.

Uneasy

While not as deeply disturbing as the of hype would make you believe, it was uneasy for sure. I liked it; photography was beautiful, and the slow tension and mystery keeps you hooked. But at the same time, I was slightly disappointed for not requiring therapy afterwards.

Bad ass

Godzilla is only showed sparingly, instead building up mystery and an ominous atmosphere surrounding his presence. It has gorgeous drawings of awesomely designed space warfare in it. So all in all, despite the usual hysteric acting, I thought this was rather successful and was quite impressed.

Somber viking tale

This somber, raw and quiet movie, only occasionally augmented by bearded vikings mumbling a few words, is quite a slow burner but is intense nonetheless. It worked for about 3 quarters in, after which I started longing for some action or plot development. Still, a nice change of pace.

A mature and pretty Anime, with some problems

While there are some anime annoyances, like bizarre behavior of all females, this had quite a mature, restrained atmosphere in which the Gundam action was secondary. I couldn't quite follow it, but was impressed by some gorgeous visuals (like nature and downtown cities) as well as the music.

It will pull you in, too

I didn't want to go see this movie, but the terrifying story and suspense did keep me glued to the screen. The confusing ending with mixed memories from a past wasn't really necessary.

Why minds should be set free

Go see it if you don't buy that description. I really appreciated this wildly imaginative story backed up with spectacular animation. It is a testimony for what may come from unrestricted, unbound filmmaking... even if the result may be difficult to connect with emotionally.

Party sucked, movie did not

One of those movies that plays out in a single place with a single group of people, and a good one at that. The main goal of slowly building up a feeling of discomfort and anxiety to resolve what's going on is successfully achieved by the fine actors, story and no frills.

For a sequel, this seems about right!

While it won't yield the awe of the first one, simply because we are used to it, I'd say it quite successfully finds a balance between delivering what made the first one so good, and introducing a new story, plenty of memorable moments and some new fun characters.

Strength by purity

Very well played and realistically shot drama, that cleverly switches between the cold, calculated negotiations and the sweaty, messy situation on the ship. It disposes of all ornaments, which makes it a honest if not somewhat sterile experience.

Unpleasant weekend trip

Things really go south, and you really feel for the couple as it goes from spoiling to terrorizing and worse. Making the gang all kids makes it all very uncomfortable, as you want them to smash their heads against a rock but they sort of can't.

A succesfull approach for a subject like this

I needed some time to make up my mind. Never quite sure whether it is erotic or just plain nasty, whether it is pretentious or unique and brave. Overall, not a pleasant experience, but one with impact and substance, and some images that keep on haunting me.

Simple but highly enjoyable

I guess it's guilty of doing some dinosaur cliche's, and perhaps we won't ever be impressed by them again as we once did. But I liked seeing them in a different scifi context, and I also thought the movie was a simple but very solid and amusing ride. Adam manages to elevate it far above pulp.

Beautiful painting of heroic bloodshed

This side effect of the wonderful style is that is also creates veil that blocks connection with the people and story. But as a glorious ode to violence and bravery, I thought it was impressive, intense and beautifully crafted. Also: Eva Green.

Well done despite limited resources

It feels a bit low-budget and simplistic at times, but it still hits the mark at exploring this phenomenon and incorporating it into a very entertaining, thought-provoking movie. It had me look into this stuff afterwards and check the Monopoly guy for sure.

Cheesy at it's best

Even when it was made, it already was silly, cheesy and ridiculous as can be. But it also managed to be an irresistible and charming combination of fun and dumb action that make it a classic. Every time I stumble upon it, I just cannot switch it of.

An intense and probably revealing inside look full of contrasts

I found it especially good at creating contrasts: how the atmosphere changes before, during and after a shoot, and how she continues to pursue her ambitions despite the demeaning and sometimes brutal treatment. The clean, observant, non-dramatic style makes it feel like a documentary.

Classy version

It's at it's best when it patiently explores the uncanny feeling of someone being in your house, without resorting to cheesy effects of cheap scares. Later on it turns into more gimmicky cat-and-mouse affair, but still with plenty of class. Great lead actress, too!

Unique, dark and bright

While the viral success and hype it generated may seem a bit much, I would agree that it is a fresh, well made series that make you eager for the next episode. The bright colors contrast nicely with the dark theme, you get to like the protagonists and loathe the bad ones.

A very decent if not somewhat inplausible mystery/horror

When I thought about this movie afterwards, I started feeling the story was rather far fetched in places, but this didn't bother when I watched it. Instead, I rather enjoyed the ominous mood, the tasteful reli-creepiness and the cold scenery.

Kitchy, unique and atmospheric

I almost could not get over the heinous, ridiculous way the crew looked (especially Mack!), but realized it matched with the oddly unique, kitschy interior of the spaceship, creating a unique vibe. I really liked this show, with an interesting story, a great finale and fantastic music.

Plenty of coolness in here

I will never get used to the sound of desperate Japanese women panicking. Otherwise, this movie offers neat graphics, a cool atmosphere, imaginative kick-ass weapons and great monsters - whose design is familiar like 'typical' ghouls, but brought to live with high details and uncanny lighting.

Mostly succesful

A risky movie concept, requiring a top-notch actor and scripts to make the switch from actual boredom to fascination. Despite the ill-advised decision to make the astronaut a rather cold lifeless character, and some moments of actual boredom, this movie also gets plenty of things right. Well done.

Exciting fly on the wall

A nail-biting experience that had me hooked and managed to make the legal ramifications of firing a missile quite exciting indeed. I just thought the crying, insubordinate drone pilots were ridiculous.

A classic that is a little too slow for it's own good

A moody and stylish scifi movie that defined the standard for shaping futuristic dark cities and matched it with a great soundtrack. I like how it takes time for everything, including people simply going from A to B, but near the end the slow pacing isn't quite rewarded by the underwhelming climax.

Interesting look at an incredible machine

There is a slight overload of scientific superlatives on how important and revolutionary it all is. But with a device like that, and theories like that, and findings like that, I suppose they are right! Quite fascinating.

Beautiful contrasts

The beauty of the girl amidst the cold neon lights and people, which I guess symbolizes the harsh nature of the modelling world, works out great. It then builts up to an even greater contrast with death and gore, without ever becoming cheap or revolting. Wow.

As good as you could hope for

A fine sequel. I liked how the visualized the internet. It doesn't, however, manage to overcome the sequel curse and bring back the magical atmosphere, or the refined and diverse story line from the first part.

Find the purpose of live by ending it. Twice.

The movie is mostly a philosophical essay about life and death, told through voice overs, long flashbacks and some events in the future. It can be a bit slow and loaded, but mostly it hits the mark and provides an interesting watch with some great acting and a good atmosphere.

nasty and cold, but quite interesting indeed

A cold and surreal affair, the kind that pulls of showing rather expliciet sex scenes without being arousing in the slightest, with peculiar acting and dialogues that alienate even further. I found it quite intriguing.

A big little movie

A reminder that glimpses can be more effective than in your face CGI mayhem, and that simple stories told and acted with care can be just as engrossing as any. A rather nifty little movie.

Over the top science fiction action movie (in a good way)

A bit too much of everything, but somehow just right because of that!

Take some time to let it sink in, and start enjoying

Not familiar with this comic, I feared I'd never get into this unexplained stream of weirdness. But the humor, vivid space combat action and sympathetic characters grew on me and left me quite entertained indeed.

Okay these guys are tough

As these men are battered & bruised, smashed against rocks, cornered and shot, the increasing dread of death and hopelessness comes across very well. Intense movie that stuck for a while.

Shoot 'em up between navy seals and taliban

Main part of the movie consists of Americans and Taliban chasing, shooting, injuring and killing eachother. Apparently a navy seal can sustain more injury than Iron Man ("is there a bullet in my head?"). Overall an okay movie for those of us not easily scared by bloody scenes.

Like always, a really mixed experience

I have a strange relationship with Ghost in the Shell. Most of it I don't follow, and I might fall asleep numerous times during the tech and political babble. But it is also so irresistibly cool and tasty, often with splendid music, that I keep coming back to it. Like this episode.

West Side Story turned on it's head

It's a wonderful movie with a big heart, but the lovestory in it just doesn't quite reach the same level as the visuals and original ideas.

A sober animal horror that fails to push through

In a way, this is the eighties animal swarm horror movies re-imagined in a much more realistic, restrained and adult way. It works for the most part, but the same simple and slow atmosphere also had me yearning for some more excitement.

A bizarre gore anarchy

Initially I was wondering if there was going to be any point to this, but gradually the continuous very gory executions, set against this totalitarian society with continuous advertisement for human meat.... somehow began to work. Very rebellious and sickening. For some, that is a plus.

curious revenge tale

A curious revenge tale that benefits from some surrealistic and disorienting elements. Highly original and quite brutal at times. But I must admit that none of it really stuck - i am having a hard time remembering it.

Sad horror, but without real impact

It's definitely out of the ordinary. Partly body horror, but I also found something very sad about it. The overall feeling however, is that of a student joke - especially after the end scroll. Somehow all the misery sort of passes you by.

Quite good for what it is

Overall, this mixture of bad movie making, bloody horror, crap fx and boobs (and other genitalia) make for some for remarkably satisfying brainless popcorn entertainment.

A lovely idea loosing focus

The idea of dropping antihero's into an ancient mythological epos is great, and works well in the Norwegian small town atmosphere. But it's like they didn't really know what to do with it, so they resorted to a tedious environmental issue and teenage drama as the most prominent plot points.

Good

A very decent, well acted and engrossing thriller with a good built-up.

Good not great

It doesn't over-dwell in the misery, and the broken relationship between the two added an effective layer to it. But I thought acting was good but not great, and wondered if it could have been a more profound experience.

I liked the original Mad Max movies more....

This was actually rather good

A great movie that is balanced right, looks tight and manages to maintain a sense of depth and style throughout the machine-flesh mayhem. I also liked how Max himself was a bit off, unconventional hero. A bit mad indeed, and therefore more interesting than your average hero.

The same old mistakes

A dark atmosphere and some hefty gung-ho warfare could have made this intense, were it not for the inevitable patriotism and flag waving, annoying Hollywood plot conveniences and stereotype terrorists (oh come on - nuclear launch codes, again?).

Something embarrasing you keep looking at

The change of static scenery's and unapologetic overacting makes it feel theatric. The many explicit sex scenes mostly come across as clumsy and awkward, as does the jumpy, idiotic and embarrassing behavior of Caligula. Yes, embarrassing was my main sensation, but I have to admit I was intrigued too

Okay

Slow paced movie with a rather straightforward plot, nevertheless managed to keep my attention. Interesting insight into moral issues that people are facing while struggling forward in current day society.

It turns out, a decent horror thriller

My finger was resting on the stop button for the first 15 minutes, but then the story, performances and uncomfortable atmosphere materialized and made this a worthwhile movie indeed. May have been limited in budget, but played it out nicely.

Good until the actual club shows up

The first half is quite shocking and uneasy, as we're all left in the dark as to what is causing these tragedies. Then the real 'club' shows up, which are terribly annoying characters who do annoying things and form a dissonant wedge from which the film does not recover.

You may not get it

It is hard to connect with this strange mixture of crazy outfits, ridiculous people, bizarre plot, lessons in life and bloody violence. But once I did - way into the movie - I started to laugh and was quite entertained.

A more personal drama involving time paradoxes

I thought it was an interesting idea to have the effects of messing with time work on a more personal, relational level. And while it certainly works and creates a commendable movie, sometimes it felt more like a family drama and it sort of dozes off.

A more 'classy' slasher.. if that means anything

After a pretty gory and nasty beginning, it switches to a cat-and-mouse game later on, and has a twist on offer as well. It's more intelligent and refined that your average popcorn slasher, but the characters left me somewhat underwhelmed.

Superman remains tough to beat, and tough to make a good film out of

They have given him some worthy adversaries other than kryptonite, resulting in some really smashing showdowns. But the storytelling is messy, and Hollywood still doesn't realize that an overdose of fast, blurry and over the top destruction only leaves viewers bored and cut off from the movie.

Strange, unpleasant yet secretly fascinating

One of the strangest movies I have seen. I found it an unpleasant experience in ways I had not felt before. Everything is just so confusing, nasty, sweaty and ugly. But at the same time I was fascinated enough to look up the director and will keep track of her future works.

Creepy cult not really creepy

Sure enough, these secluded cults with weird rituals provide some creepiness and anxiety, but I felt that Cage seemed disjointed from it all (running around in a suite for some reason), and the cult almost leaned toward being goofy rather truly scary.

Funny and witty

An above average funny movie with quite a few good laughs. It's all courtesy of Stiller's monumental talent for painfully cringe-worthy situations we can all relate too. The rest of the cast is not too shabby either.

Genuine and exciting, but full of wankers

I liked the authentic feel throughout, as well as the restrained acting and good underwater scenes. Something was not quite right with the characters though, as everyone was sort of a zombie ignorant ass about everything that was going on.

Japanese kitch with chilling monsters

I may never get used to the silly Japanese overacting and kitsch expressions, but I have to say these pale giants with their lifeless stares are some of the more intense and terrifying monsters I have seen lately. Memorable and unique.

Good heavy duty action with some issues

A commendable action flick with some very well shot, high-octane, hard-hitting brawling going on. After a while though, the man's ability to endure pain and injury gets a bit much, and the annoying acting style of the kid makes it hard to buy into their supposedly developing bond.

restless but satisfying horror and mystery in a distinctive format

The stories are dark and nasty but all have some have a pleasing element of mystery in them, really making you curious. Later on, some smart connections between the stories unfold, which shows they put in some effort instead throwing in random gore. The nervous presentation is a lot, but it worked

How to deal with adolescent hardships (in a non-comic way)

No action or comedy flick, but a nice movie when you are in the right mood for an insightful trip into the world of adolescents and the challenges they have to face. Key words: future plans and careers, (badly ending) relationships, and alcohol abuse (to name just a few we all know so well ;) )

Good, but let down by the 'crew'

The point of view of this movie is master stroke and works beautifully. But I found the scared, disjunct, insubordinate and unorganized crew - even before anything happens - unrealistic an unconvincing. I would have rather seen the tension come from war and claustrophobia, not amateurism.

A little mainstream but not bad

It doesn't break any new grounds and is fairly reminiscent of mainstream horror these days. But it does manage to hold it's own with some decent moments, the 60's entourage and fine actresses.

An adventure like this ought to be more exciting

Looks good and overall a good watch. But it didn't get quite as emotional, scary, claustrophobic or engrossing as I had hoped. I think the slightly detached actors are the main problem.

Too much?

Despite a couple of awesome scenes and a praiseworthy new tone and style, I felt underwhelmed. I am getting tired of some of the star wars ways, the casino sidestory was awful, I didn't like Luke and I was bored during the endless contemplating of the force and good and evil. It's getting too much.

Mostly fine

I wasn't sure I wanted to watch an entire movie featuring exaggerated Q+HTBI characters, but Kevin Bacon is putting on quite a show, and the slowly developing sinister undertone makes it interesting. As it draws to and end, it felt ideas ran out and it winded up as a mediocre slasher.

A naughtly mixture of humor and bloody murder

Successfully plays out comedy and murder throughout the movie in an unusual but successful cocktail.

A decent but not perfect single-person, single-location flick

One of those risky movies shot on a single location with a single actor holding everything together. It works - it is a thrilling watch. It lacks, however the craftsmanship or plot to really make it bite your nails, and would have benefited from more realism and a more likable lead character.

Decent scifi mystery that fails short of being great

A very decent flick with some nice ideas and a good script. The mystery of what's going on, as well as the performances and darkness were a bit mellow for my taste.

Sweet little mystery

It could be said that the content is fairly minimal, but this didn't bother me at all. It is wonderfully mysterious, the slowness just adds to atmosphere and feeling of desolation, and they were really able to get the most out of the awe inspiring scenery and mystical abandoned town.

Tasty shocker, but not all ingredients match

Likable because it is original and pleasantly bizarre, but I found the events to unlikely to really be shocking, and the mix of humor and horror isn't for me. Like sweet and salt.

Mixed up

While it contains several outstanding scenes and sound effects (seismic charge!) to make it worthwhile, it is let down big time by an overload of boring politics, cringe worthy attempts at drama and awkward slapstick.

Intriguing oddball

A really odd manga that is wrong for many reasons, and had me wondering why I was watching it several times. But the strange turned into intrigue, and kept me curious enough to watch all of it - which was rewarded by a tasty finale.

Slightly sinister animation movie

A nicely animated movie with some anticipated twists in the plot every now and then. Somehow I wasn't completely pulled in by the story, but an enjoyable watch anyway.

Uneasy in a good way

Has an effective, uneasy atmosphere, and the agonizing sensation of people trying to take care of a strange human in a room in the house, without really revealing what's in there. Could have had more impact with some more style and direction though, and booh for the misleading artwork.

Nice surprise that dares to do things differently

I quite liked this little nugget. The way we see him going about his work without even seeing the demons, and without any pampering explanation, is pleasantly mysterious and makes us observers peeking into his life. It keeps it intimate and compact, and the visuals are nice.

Decent horror in the woods

Overall it does a good job at harvesting the creepiness of woods and witches. Unfortunately, the guys are rather unsympathetic and it's hard to buy into their friendship. It also feels a bit linear; I was waiting for some sort of twist in the story.

Beautifull but distant

Once again beautifully crafted and a marvel to look at. But once the effect wears off, you're left with 1-dimensional, quite unlikable characters whom it is hard to care for, in a world so exaggerated it is hard to believe in.

Point of view is too boring for what is happening

A darker, more serious version of the original, that is actually quite classy at times. Unfortunately, the story is focused almost entirely at the marketing of Robocop and influencing public opinion about automated crime control, which I did not find the most exciting perspective.

Plenty to like but not to feel

Overall a satisfactory experience for animation enthusiast like myself, with some imaginative action and storytelling. But with no background story and no real character to know or love, it's doesn't really hit you emotionally.

Wicked action saved the mission

One the one hand, we have very peculiar acting, misplaced slo-mo shots and indigestible patriotism and voiceovers. On the other, we have exquisite action scenes and a Call of Duty-style story telling that works very well.

A bit rough around the edges, but it is in there

It feels a bit sluggish and undirected, and despite some horrific scenes never got truly scary - as if the director hasn't mastered scary cinematography quite yet. But - it still has a lot of gruesome and really vile moments, very good horrormusic and starts to grow on you as it descents into hell.

Ups and downs. Mostly up though.

I liked the overall concept, the dark yet sensual atmosphere, and some cool action scenes. But I was struggling with the ice cold characters, a lot of talking, the unnecessarily complicated story and the ridiculous Agatha Christie climax with the big reveal with everyone standing in a room.

Too nasty

It looks fantastic and was made well. But the brutality and sheer nastiness in the movie left a bad taste in my mouth. I am still having nightmares about Brazen Bulls.

Plenty to complain about, but enough going for it

Maybe it didn't quite nail the claustrophobic atmosphere the way it could have, it aches towards a B-movie and most characters are unlikable and simplistic. But I gotta say: the overall concept is creepy and done nicely, and the mold/spore enemy original and impressive. Nice music, too

The secret ingredient was missing

One of those curious cases where everything seems to be in place, yet still something's not quite right, and you can't pinpoint what it is. It is made just fine, but I had trouble getting into it, getting exciting by it, and remembering much of it.

Intriguing but executed a bit dull

It is hard to follow, but in a nice, mindfuck twisted way, and it is carried on a diligent synth ambient track as well. But something about it is a bit simplistic and uninspired, like the creators were more interested in the idea itself that the presentation of it.

There's something about it

I can't get my head around this one. It is a bit weird, slow, they talk too much and I am not even sure that much happened in this episode. But once it is over, I felt like I had witnessed something deep and profound. The atmosphere in these animated series is just so.. unworldly.

Warm and cozy

It's hard to fault this family-friendly, cozy, good looking and amusing comedy, as they balanced of of these things just about right for the target audience. Personally, I'd like some more edge, but this is probably the wrong movie to ask.

not scary, not surpising, but ok

It's not scary and quite predictable, but it is quite solid nonetheless, and offers some decent amusement.

Good warmovie but short on real involvement

Enough thrills of naval combat to satisfy war movie aficionados like myself, but it's not perfect. The gray and dark tones seem excessive, and the story is a very basic mission-begins-mission-ends affair, causing a lack of involvement. The two flashbacks of a woman seem a futile attempt to fix this

Fun adventure let down by the CGI fights

A lively adventure movie with a 'classic' atmosphere, and fun performances of the main characters and their constant quarrels. Like many other CGI-heavy movies, I found the combat scenes hard to follow, unpleasant and ultimately not very exciting. I wish they kept them more 'classic' as well.

Adult enough to avoid horror pitfalls, but doesn't add much either

For the most part it stays away from cheap scares, and has enough confidence to slowly but surely built up the tension and story, and reach a fairly creative reveal. But it fails to get under your skin as it remains slightly tame and suffers from some implausibility.

A fair variation on superhero movies

The story is told more interestingly and seriously as the title and subject would have you think, and I quite enjoyed this small but tasteful superhero variation.

Attractive mystery let down by words and characters

I love Shyamalan's enticing and mysterious stories, as well as the way he floats the camera through them. So I will probably watch all of them, but unfortunately this one was let down by rather clunky dialogue, delivered unnaturally by odd characters. It felt like watching a play.
