The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Various involved people talk you through the horrible contents of the videotapes of a sadistic serial killer

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
13-01-2019
6.5

Nicely set up, but what for?

The fact that I looked up whether this was based on a true story means it was somewhat convincing and it definitely has it's moments, but overall it felt mostly like torture porn of the kind that makes you wonder why you are watching it. But perhaps that's always the case with torture porn.
6.5

The Predator

The predators are coming back to earth. The good, the bad and the loony try to deal with it.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
13-01-2019
6.5

Too much over the top nonsense stuff, taking away the magic

It was good to hear the predator music again, but not the rather cringe worthy lines delivered by the cliched and over the top characters in this movie. How did the biologist turn into a skilled commando instantly? The spacedogs - I don't know... just too many things not quite right in here.
6.5

IO

Woman is trying to find cures for a dying world, but an uninvited stranger urges her to join him and catch the last rescue ship into space

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
19-01-2019
4.5

Sympathetic but very boring

I really tried to get into the flow of this slow-burn movie, as a small, delicate an intimate story about big issues. But boring is boring, and the quasi-meaningful dialogue and cascade of pointless scenes made me yell COME ON too many times.
4.5

Atomic Blonde

Sexy superspy (with blond hair) is send to pre-wall Germany to recover a list of great importance

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
20-01-2019
7

An over the top spy story with a cool sauce

With 80s music and a Berlin-wall zeitgeist, this movie has really cool atmosphere. I must also mention the extraordinary single-shot fighting scene (alas with not so convincing fighting). However, the typical, over complex, spy nonsense and her infinite skills and grasp were too much for me.
7

Trench 11

Near the end of WWI, a group of soldiers investigates an abandoned German underground complex to find out what they did in there

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
26-01-2019
6

A bit underwhelming

The premise sets up a decent mysterious and scary atmosphere, but after a lot of flashlights in endless, similar looking dark hallways and disappointing bad guys, the thing runs out of fuel and fails to reap the claustrophobic possibilities.
6

Curvature

A timemachine forces a woman to stop her other self, who has already used it, from committing a murder

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
27-01-2019
6

Too flawed to make the story come alive

I am a sucker for awesome stories like these, that have the deep low synth tones as a soundtrack, like this one, even if they are made with limited resources... like this one. But it is very minimal indeed, with slow pacing and unconvincing acting, making me bored rather than intrigued.
6

Skyscraper

Man is going to save his family from the highest skycraper in the word. On fire. With one leg. With crooks inside.

7.5

The fun to be had!

No doubt we could make a long list of things that are dumb or preposterous about this movie. But I thought they nailed that lovely vibe of action-disaster movies of yesteryear, and I honestly can't think of a recent movie that made me enjoy myself and sit on the edge of my seat like this one!
7.5

The Babadook

Widow is trying to get by with her needy son when she also releases a shadowy presence in her house by reading a strange childrens book

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
02-02-2019
8

Succesful on multiple levels

Even more than the restrained and tasteful horror story, I was impressed by the suffocating and agonizing experience of watching her slide into insanity, due to sleep deprivation, desperation and social seclusion. It's sad, original, scary and intense. Bravo.
8

Tombraider

Lara sets of the Japan to look for her long missing father, who was investigating a mysterious tomb on a desolate island

Faithful videogame recreations don't automatically mean it's good

It follows the game really closely, and some of the scenes and scenery were really familiar. But, as much as I loved these games, seeing it recreated with real people just falls short and makes everything shallow, predictable and lifeless. I Guess this exemplifies the problem with videogame movies.
6.5

UFO

Talented math student gets obsessed with a brief UFO sighting. Not only to find out about their intentions, but also the coverup surrounding it.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
09-02-2019
7

Intriguing little UFO tale

I was sort of waiting for a movie like this. Make the UFO secondary, and focus on what it does to people. This one sort of does that, and I was quite amused by it and liked the central role of mathematics. It can feel a bit low budget at times, but overall: yeh, a smart and nice surprise.
7

Ready Player One

In a near future, where people spend most of their time living their fantasies in VR, a group of friends aims to solve a grand puzzle in this virtual world

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
09-02-2019
6

Childish and patronizing fan service

I am a movie, game and VR aficionado so this ought to have been perfect for me. But I found it hard to get into this childish and strange mixture, and it struck me like it was made by someone who doesn't really play games and was constantly going: see what i did here. You kids like this yes?
6

Godzilla: The Planet Eater

As mankind was unable to get rid of Godzilla, they summon something godlike to do so

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
17-02-2019
7

There's something about it

I can't get my head around this one. It is a bit weird, slow, they talk too much and I am not even sure that much happened in this episode. But once it is over, I felt like I had witnessed something deep and profound. The atmosphere in these animated series is just so.. unworldly.
7

Let Her Out

Something's growing inside of a woman... and it starts to take over

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
25-02-2019
6

Doesn't do itself justice

The basic idea is quite good and could potentially have resulted in a very intense, physiological and emotional horror. But alas, despite a reasonable beginning, I found the actors weren't up to it and the movie has mostly some plain and borrowed jump scares to offer.
6

Alita: Battle Angel

Man rebuilts a cyborg he found in a trashpile. A very special cyborg it turns out...

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
25-02-2019
8

Great

Fearing a hysteric and flat CGI bonanza, I was pleasantly surprised. We actually get to like the characters, it's exciting and original. It has a nice big-amazing-adventure vibe that I haven't felt for while. But yes, it does feature awesome, bright daylight CGI in every scene.
8

Euphoria

A woman dying of cancer goes to a secluded place where people with a similar fate come to spend their last days, and asks her sister to escort her

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
03-03-2019
7

Good not great

It doesn't over-dwell in the misery, and the broken relationship between the two added an effective layer to it. But I thought acting was good but not great, and wondered if it could have been a more profound experience.
7

Peppermint

When her husband and daughter are buraly murderedand the villains walk free, she seeks revenge on ther own

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
03-03-2019
6.5

Exchanging the sexes isn't enough

This really is the Punisher but with a female lead and lacking a dark costume. While this may give us an entertaining action revenge flick, it was too familiar, I was annoyed by the army of stereotype badguys and lead character's deep hatred inside (I assume there was) didn't quite come out.
6.5

Nightflyers

The crew on a spaceship, on it's way to make contact with alien lifeforms, finds itself in more and more peril as they come closer

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
18-03-2019
5

These poor series still contain enough mystery to make it worthwhile

So for this monumentally important mission, they assembled the most insecure, insubordinate, fashion-conscious and unstable crew they could find and make them improvise the entire mission in an insanely incoherent way. But apparently I love space mystery so much that I still watched it. All of it.
5

Us

A family is assaulted in their vacation home by... themselves?

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
26-03-2019
7.5

An interesting horror that is adequately scary

An original, gripping and quite tense horror movie that had me talking and pondering long after it was finished... which is a good thing that I find increasingly rare. I just thought that it felt short on being truly scary or under the skin, the way I thought it would be.
7.5

Hunter Killer

American submarine is sent to rescue the Russian president... without starting a world war

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
31-03-2019
7

Decent macho stuff

It tries a little too hard to be macho and has everyone talking in super tough guy one liners... all at the expense of realism and true tension. But what's left is still an entertaining, action-packed submarine movie for us to jerk off to the glorious American military.
7

The Osiris Child

Pilot must save his daughter from a planet overrun by vicious beasts

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
08-04-2019
6.5

Bits and pieces

At times this has some pretty graphics, some decent acting and some passable action scenes. But if also features some annoying characters to ruin things, and as a whole felt a bit directionless, and empty.
6.5

Isn't it Romantic

no-life woman bumbs her head and wakes up in a Romatic Comedy

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
08-04-2019
7

I just wish it was nastier

It's a great idea that will yield a few laughs. But ironically, it's not really funnier than the movies it is making fun of, and even comes up with the very moral lesson I thought it was revolting against.
7

Drone

Familyman secretly serves as a contractor flying execution missions with drones, but he's not as save as he thinks

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
14-04-2019
7

Yes, it is leading somewhere

For while I thought this movie was compensating a lack of substance with long scenes, slow montage and drifting off from the source material. But slowly the realization of what's going on is creeping in, climaxing in the agonizing dinner scene. Not what I thought it would be, but quite decent.
7

Don't Leave Home

Artist inspired by cases of vanishing children is one day invited to the home of a priest who's painings make people dissapear

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
21-04-2019
7.5

Effective and subtle

There's something small and simple about this oddly titled horror, which makes it subtle, intimate and quite intriguing. There's not much standard horror mayhem, but rather a sense of discomfort and mystery. Quiet nicely done, I must say,
7.5

The Silence

When man-eating bats are released from an ancient cave, only those who can live in silence stand a chance

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
05-05-2019
6.5

Does what it needs to, but not much more

It sort of does what you expect in a tidy and effective way, to deliver a respectable suspense horror. But so shortly after the superior 'a Quite Place' it came across as a bit tame and second rate.
6.5

The Wandering Earth

Earth is equiped with huge thrusters to fly it to a new habitable galaxy, but the journey knows many dangers

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
05-05-2019
6

The Chinese are starting to copy the wrong things

I can appreciate huge production values as well as the story, but the execution is chaotic, at times incomprehensible and sadly felt like the Chinese are now emulating the wrong Hollywood kitsch and cliches. It felt like a Chinese Armageddon clone.
6

What Happened to Monday?

In a fascist single-child society, septuplet sisters have found a way to cheat the system. But for how long?

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
12-05-2019
6.5

Gimmicky

While original and somewhat amusing, I found it mostly gimmicky. The sisters are simplified and overacted stereotypes like the 'tough sporty jog', the 'posh' and 'smart computer nerd' (with glasses, a cap and long sleeves of course!) but without emotional connection to any of them.
6.5

Tremors

Texas country folk dealing with massive worm-like creatures attacking their tiny town

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
25-05-2019
7.5

Cheesy at it's best

Even when it was made, it already was silly, cheesy and ridiculous as can be. But it also managed to be an irresistible and charming combination of fun and dumb action that make it a classic. Every time I stumble upon it, I just cannot switch it of.
7.5

Suspiria (2018)

Talented ballet dancer is accepted in a mysterious danceschool, were something occult is going on

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
25-05-2019
7.5

Uneasy

While not as deeply disturbing as the of hype would make you believe, it was uneasy for sure. I liked it; photography was beautiful, and the slow tension and mystery keeps you hooked. But at the same time, I was slightly disappointed for not requiring therapy afterwards.
7.5

Overlord

A ww2 squad lands into German-occupied France to blow up a tower, but encounter dark occult nazi experiments on their way

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
31-05-2019
7

Meaty mix

A mixture of war, action and horror, delivering a meaty and enjoyable watch. It is, however, not super exciting nor super scary, and it is let down by some cliches and annoying characters, especially that damn kid.
7

The Karate Kid

After moving to California with his mother, a boy gets beaten up regularly.. until it the local handyman teaches him karate

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
02-06-2019
8

Still stands like a crane

It may be a bit slow by today's standards, but this masterfully serves to let us grow attached to the wonderful lead characters, get involved in the story and training and then, after all those years, still have goosebumps during the finale.
8

Perfect Blue

Pop idol band girl switches to acting, which quickly turns dark and strange

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
02-06-2019
7.5

Great change of tone

With it's minimal animation, stiff voiceovers and Japanese girlpop power vibe, it took me some effort to get into this. But this beautifully contrasts with the dark and vile direction it takes on later, and then, when it starts to mess with time and your head as well, the effort had been worth it!
7.5

Adrift

Freshly in love couple sail a boat across the Pacific back to the States. But misery strikes, wrecks the boat and now survival is up to her

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
02-06-2019
6.5

Ruined by constant flashbacks

For it's entire duration, the movie alternates the present with flashbacks in which we have to endure a sugar coated love romance with cheesy music to boot. This constantly resets the tension and sensation of despair, making this survival movie much less intense than it could and should have been.
6.5

I Am Mother

In a secluded facility, a robot raises a little girl as a first in a repopulation program for a toxic earth, but then the girl let's in an unexpected visitor.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
08-06-2019
7

Decent

A decent looking and interesting story with plot twists that, while not completely unexpected, keep things interesting. After a while it started to drag a bit, and I found the visitor so unpleasant and annoying that, instead of sympathizing with her, I wished mother would have gotten rid her.
7

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

More huge titan monsters are awoken, and only Godzilla can restore the balance

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
09-06-2019
5

Humans ruined earth AND this movie

Ruined by hollow, cringy and unfunny characters that speak exclusively in kitsch onelines and are monster experts, submarine commanders and anything else that comes their way. The monsters can't save it either, because, while fairly good looking, their fights are hard to follow and uninteresting.
5

Closer to God

The aftermath of bringing the first cloned child into this world... or was it?

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
16-06-2019
7

Uneasy in a good way

Has an effective, uneasy atmosphere, and the agonizing sensation of people trying to take care of a strange human in a room in the house, without really revealing what's in there. Could have had more impact with some more style and direction though, and booh for the misleading artwork.
7

The Favourite

Maid elbows her way into the personal circle of the queen

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
06-07-2019
7.5

Quite unique

I tried this because it was hyped as the costume movie that, because of the vile play and firework between the female rivals, was also suitable for men. And indeed, I did enjoy the acting, the beautiful decors and camerawork people making their way through the castle. It has quite a unique vibe.
7.5

The Golem

A woman tries to defend a secluded Jewish community by summoning a creature from the soil

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
07-07-2019
6

Great setting, but second half is too directionless

It lays down a really good mood with the sober, deeply religious and ritualized community. But it feels like they forgot to think through what would happen once the Golem is there, so it starts to feel loose and deflates. The music, while good, was too eager and didn't really fit well.
6

Clara

Expelled from his teaching position, an obsessed professor carries on his search for exoplanets with help from a not so obvious assistant

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
30-07-2019
6.5

An exciting scientific quest with a double agenda

The quasi-deep dialogue between the two felt forced and banal, and a stone-juggling hippie telling the atheist scientist (narrow-minded, grumpy and depressed of course!) how to find planets was quite preposterous. The science of it was nice though, and at the end it still was strangely rewarding.
6.5

Captive State

An underground network of rebels fight back against alien occupation

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
01-08-2019
6

Average

Apart from a few tasty scenes, the scifi level is very low and they might as well have been fighting human oppressors. I found it hard to follow what everyone was doing and what the plan was, and the red dust from the poster is not in this movie AT ALL. Quite average.
6

Lifeforce

Space mission takes samples from inside a mysterious space derelict, but brings home terror doing so. Space vampires, no less!

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
06-08-2019
7

Entertaining mix of nonsense

Back from when actors were ugly and sweaty, and people were interrogated by slapping them in the face, comes this remarkable mix of scifi, horror, zombie-outbreak and soft erotica. And it's remarkably entertaining at that.
7

Aquaman

The story of sea-based superhero aquaman, and his quest to stop an all-out war with the dry people

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
06-08-2019
7

Sympathetic, fun and over the top

Like many superhero movies, it gets a bit too much and over the top as it moves towards the end (drum playing octopus did it for me) But I must say this has a heart at the right place, Aquaman and others were very likable, and overall it's an unpretentious fun adventure I enjoyed.
7

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Our lego friends venture into strange new worlds so there can be peace between two lego realms

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
07-08-2019
7

More of the same

I could see all the things I loved about the original, yet I felt a bit indifferent about it without knowing exactly why. I guess it really is more of the same, which - even if that means more of a good thing - means the initial excitement is not here. But hey: it's still a dazzling lego movie!
7

Kubo and the Two Strings

Stop motion animation about a young boy who enters a ghostly realm to flee from dark enemies and prepare for a confrontation with his grandpa, who is after the boys eye.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
07-08-2019
8

Wonderfully diverse, different and pleasant

The story may sound bizarre, but it is told in a very interesting, confident and pleasantly mysterious way. It is beautiful to look at, has some really exciting scenes and is a welcome change in style from the big-name animations coming from the big studios.
8

Captain Underpants

When the evil head of school wants to seperate two best friends, they hypnotise him so he becomes their comic fantasy Captain Underpants

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
09-08-2019
6.5

Ok, but a bit timid

Funny and sympathetic, but with a title like that I expected a little more rebellion, wit and anarchy (even if the climax involves a giant toilet).
6.5

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

The Transylvanian monsters go on a cruise, but they are not free from danger

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
10-08-2019
6

Hit and miss. Loads of them.

I am beginning to see that the manic rate of good and bad jokes per minute is a trademark of this franchise, rather than perhaps a way to camouflage the lack of really good ideas. So it's non-stop hit and miss, but ultimately quite forgettable. Except maybe the fish. And the puppy.
6

Replicas

When a memory transfer scientist looses his entire family in a car crash, he attempts to get them back by cloning them, including their mind

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
11-08-2019
6

Mostly a missed opportunity

It's a good idea but never really takes off. Everyone seems disconnected and indifferent about what's going on, it lacks the eerie or fascinating ambience I would expect with a story like this, and it has got one of those annoying air computer interfaces, operated by ridiculous hand movements.
6

Red Sparrow

In order to care for her mother, a woman has no other choice but to join the Russian Seductive - I mean Secret - Service

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
13-08-2019
7

Another fine spy movie

There's nothing wrong with it. It could even be quite good. But to me, all these spy femme fatale movies are so bloody similar and generic, like they al follow the same textbook. The 'seduction training school' was something that stood out, but seemed too absurd to add points to this.
7

Glass

A researcher investigates the credibility and actual superpowers of the superhero's from Unbreakable and Split

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
17-08-2019
6

Ultimately a failed attempt to prolong this

The story provides a potentially clever reason to bring these people together and add a twist to the story, but mostly it feels like everybody was dragged in front of the camera again, the "research" was laughable and I still hate MPD - it is so embarrassing to look at, not scary at all.
6

Slenderman

Some kids summon slenderman

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
17-08-2019
5

Slenderman deserves better

I really like the slenderman figure and wanted to like this, but the lead actresses don't really convince, and everything is just moving very slowly from one scare to the next, filling up time in a story that feels a bit loose and lacking ideas, and ultimately, never gets really scary.
5

Destroyer

Worn out, dead tired female detective is haunted by a criminal from her past

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
21-08-2019
7.5

Looks and feels unique

I didn't want to keep dwelling in the extraordinary make up and looks of Kidman, but it is so powerful that it radiates onto everything in the movie, lifting it to an intense, hot and muggy experience.
7.5

Midsommar

Some kids, one heavily traumatized, visit a Swedish summer ritual. Gradually, the true terryfying nature of the festivities is revealed.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
21-08-2019
9

Horror redefined

More than the great acting, masterful built-up, gruesome imagery and deep, lasting sensation of dread, I guess it is more important to point out that this movie makes most other horrors seem like bland, generic, jump scare crap. This is unique, fresh and it still haunts me to this day.
9

Flatliners (2019)

Med students have themselves killed and take a peak at the afterlife before they are reanimated. But all is not fun and games.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
24-08-2019
5

Same problem as the original, executed worse

Like the original, the concept is awesome but I still find the clue rather dull and unsatisfying. Worse, in this version some of characters are quite annoying, some of their lines rather cheesy and the scares copied and uninspired. I was waiting for everyone to just say sorry and get this over with.
5

Game Over

Gamer girl finds out there is something morbid with her tattoo ink, and is also being hunted down by a serial killer

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
08-09-2019
7.5

Quite creative

I am still not sure if I fully grasp the story, let alone summarize it properly, but this is a rather interesting horror with plenty of worthy moments. It uses some well known horror elements but uses them to built a creative and refreshing story with.
7.5

Sinister 2

Mother and two sons living in a desolate barnhouse, where something evil lurks and there's a box of old movies in the cellar...

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
15-09-2019
6.5

The movies in this movie are better than the movie

The gruesome, uncomfortable 8 mm footage and the accompanying haunting music are still the highlights of this franchise. But between those parts, it is filling up time with slightly average horror, a somewhat incomplete story and some predictable jump scares.
6.5

The Perfection

Rivalry between two cello players leads to extremes

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
22-09-2019
7.5

competent

A competent mix of horror, thriller and drama that's different and refreshing, and has several satisfying plot twists on offer. The 'rewinding' sounds and sights seemed below the class of this movie, but that's about it.
7.5

Ad Astra

Astronaut sets off on a journey to make contact with his father, who was last seen at Neptune.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
07-10-2019
7.5

Works as a trip

Upon first viewing, I was put off by the apathetic Brad and a bunch of dissonant shenanigans in the story and space tech. But if you manage to just drift along with this dreamy, peculiar and beautiful space adventure, it can be quiet absorbing.
7.5

Deadpool 2

Deadpool looses his wife and wants to protect some kid

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
15-10-2019
6

Lacks substance, just gags

The cynical nature of Deadpool and the kitsch, over-elaborate fighting scenes are the real aces of this movie, but after a while it gets exhausting and overdone, and with only a rather vague and messy story to fall back on I found myself strangely bored for the amount of stuff that goes on.
6

Rambo Last Blood

Retired in Texas, Rambo must come back into action once more when bad stuff happens to his stepdaugther

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
15-10-2019
6.5

Not the right rambo movie for me

I can see what they were going for, but this didn't feel quite right to me. I need him to be in the jungle operating big guns - not walking through nightclubs and brothels. The final showdown was uninspired and disappointing too, as everyone simply walked into the traps and that was that.
6.5

Harbinger Down

Crab fishing boat picks up a space derelict from the ice, after which something otherwordly preys upon the crew

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
21-10-2019
6

Bearable for sci-fi horror enthusiasts

Acting is mostly bad. Dialogue strange and clunky. Monster makes inappropriate animal growls. And plenty of bad stuff besides. But still, the concept of something mysterious happening on a dark, desolate ship in the arctic is still enough to make this worthwhile, and some of it is quite okay.
6

Rogue

A group of tourists is terrorized by a huge croc in the Australian outback

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
31-10-2019
6.5

zap resistant

It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it was component enough to keep us watching as we unintentionally zapped into this. It successfully stays away from trying to be campy or deliberately bad, even if the source material could make it tempting to do so.
6.5

Typewriter

Family movies into a new home with a cursed, but sought after, typewriter in it

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
24-11-2019
7

mixed

It mixes a lot of themes with varying levels of success. There's horror, but also humor, mystery and sometimes it's almost a children's movie. Likewise it is mixed in quality. Sometimes creative and intense, but quite slow and a bit dorky at others. But it does have a unique vibe that sets it apart.
7

Rampage

Retired military man running a gorilla shelter, must save the city form mutated monster animals.

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
24-11-2019
6.5

Fine for what it is

Based a a videogame with no story to speak of, this movie came it surprisingly well (as in: this could have been much much worse). It's a mindless but fun action blockbuster like most Dwayne Johnson movies, and it works well enough as long as your expectations are realistic.
6.5

In the Tall Grass

Pursuing cries for help, a brother and sister get lost in a field of tall grass - where weird stuff is going

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
29-11-2019
6.5

Lacks the quality to make it last

It's an interesting idea, but would require a clever story and/or great actors to make it work for the entire duration of a movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't really have neither, so after a while and starts to loose appeal. Bonus points for trying though.
6.5

Hipersomnia

While rehearsing for a play, an actress gets mixed up in a horrible alternate reality in a brothel from hell

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
30-11-2019
6

Should have been better

Potentially a mind bending horror story, it feels like the creators just didn't have what it takes. It feels a bit amateuristic and improvised. near the end it derails further, with out of control horror music blasting over a just average finale.
6

Rim of the World

Stereotype kids on a summercamp become friends as the try to stop an alien invasion

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
07-12-2019
6.5

Not without problems, but ultimately entertaining enough

People rightfully pointed out the tired stereotype kids and cliche events. I'd add the unnatural jumps in the editing and uncomfortable adult jokes that make it unclear who this movie is for. But despite all this, it still did amuse me and my kids as the children adventure it mostly sets out to be.
6.5

Alpha

Set in the stone age, a boy gets seperated form his group and must find his way home, but befriends a wolf along the way

Wittenberg
Wittenberg
16-12-2019
8

Beautiful and heartfelt

I like to think of this as perhaps the first domestication of wolfs, eventually leading to dog breeds. Extremely pretty, akin towards kitsch, but never crossing that line. The storyline is also gripping, making me care about this journey and swallowing tears near the end.

Disappointing second half

Up until they are shrunk, this is set up really nicely, putting in effort to make this idea work and making me eager to find out what's next. But then the story takes a u-turn with a slightly whiny, society critical theme, a horribly overacting Vietnamese, all making the smallness sort of pointless.

I feared worse

There's the inevitable movie cliches. The main gum-chewing hero was annoying as hell. But I like how his character changed as he was given responsibility, and the movie features plenty of well done and good looking battle scenes. Yet none of it really stuck as I left the theater.

For a sequel, this seems about right!

While it won't yield the awe of the first one, simply because we are used to it, I'd say it quite successfully finds a balance between delivering what made the first one so good, and introducing a new story, plenty of memorable moments and some new fun characters.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Perfectly unimpressive

What a perfect Starwars movie. It has everything you could possibly want, done in a tasteful and beautiful manner. Yet I walk out the theater feeling indifferent, numb and with no desire to discuss, read up, rethink or relive any of it. I wonder if it's just fatigue, or something more fundamental

I gave up

I thought I'd give this a try since I quite liked the digital movie 'Gantz:O' that was based on this. I tried to persevere, but just couldn't finish this due to it's slow nature and endless waves of atrociously bad and bizarre acting and dialogues - between and even during the monster fights.

Different and diverse

I needed about two episodes to get into it, but then I really was enjoying the very diverse adventures, the interesting and colorful characters, the exciting fantasy world, the sizzling hot nudity, and the way the characters started to cross each others paths. Or was I just mesmerized by Yennifer?

Unique and terrific war movie

Part of me wished the 'single shot' peculiarity wasn't part of the hype, because you start paying attention to it and get drawn out rather than into the story. But it still contributes massively to a unique vibe and flow of this terrific war movie.

Not aged well

Sure, there is some stuff to like, but most of the appeal starts to rest on being a 'cult classic ' rather than on actually being great. I suspect it's relevance at the time has since been far surpassed by Manga.

I quite liked this

This worked remarkably well. It uses the superman foundation but takes it a whole new direction with tasteful suspense, some horror, some scifi and nice characters whilst still keeping it compact and intimate.

7

Ups and downs. Mostly up though.

I liked the overall concept, the dark yet sensual atmosphere, and some cool action scenes. But I was struggling with the ice cold characters, a lot of talking, the unnecessarily complicated story and the ridiculous Agatha Christie climax with the big reveal with everyone standing in a room.

An excellent fix of starwars, mostly good, some bad

I liked it best for it's utter love and understanding of star wars memories, old and new, brought on screen beautifully. Unfortunately, it also retains the utterly useless storm troopers by the dozens, leading to 'authentic' but ultimately unexciting combat. I also found the story very linear.

Failed experiment

I was in for it; could an overload of non-stop Micheal Bay signature crap eventually transform into a trance-like satisfying experience? We'll never know, because even he couldn't keep up the initial pace, and let this slide off to a more generic and only somewhat amusing actionflick.

5.5

No

Some action scenes successfully revisit the hard-hitting robot fights and good old car chases. But my god, Sarah Connor is a hideous, disastrous character now and the other ones have to deliver some pretty painful dialogue as well. The forever recovering evil cyborg got boring, too.

7

Good but very slow

Overall it is a fine, nicely shot and very moody mystery-horror. But I have to say it is taking the 'slow burning' up to rather extreme lengths, up until the point it almost it standing still and they somewhat loose the tension curve.

Beautiful and intriguing animation

Drawn in a beautiful minimalist but expressive style, tastefully flavored with some supernatural elements and manages to make you curious even if nothing is being said. That's quite something, even if the open ended nature felt a little easy to me.

Not much new but still good underwater thrills

This was unexpectedly solid in fact. Not much wrong with the underwater and alien excitement at all. It is let down by the rather linear story with no real surprises, and looses an entire point for awful appearance of Stewart. God I wish she looked like she did in Camp X-ray in this.

A weird failure

Is this REALLY the best mermaid story they came up with? It is ludicrous, strangely paced and uncomfortable throughout. It's like the makers were so increasingly ashamed of this movie that they tried bury it up in increasing levels darkness. The frequent 10/10 scores on IMDB are a deep mystery.

Heavy, but very good

It covers a lot of heavy-handed subjects (racism, revenge, rape, murder, repression) and inevitably features some tough scenes. But it has all been done really well. I liked how during the revenge part she remained fragile and insecure, and didn't have sudden superskills that came out of nowhere.

7

A fair Se7en clone

The story, of course, is somewhat similar to Se7en, but the atmosphere is different and not as dark en depressing. I thought it was okay, but it can be illogical at times, the detectives' flat, emotionless personality wasn't helping and the version I saw was let down by subpar english voiceovers.

8

Seriously good

Grim and sober, never succumbing to cheap thrills or green glow. Featuring strong acting and fanatic attention to historically accurate details. Apparently it still is not always exactly what went down, but the fact that it made me read up about this accident is a compliment in itself.

5.5

A bit vague and improvised

It's somewhat ok, but I felt the horrors and scares were random and incoherent collection of things borrowed from other movies. As if every idea dropped was incorporated into this, no matter if it made sense. Consequently, it never gets really scary or intense and I was sort of glad when it was over

More clean and comprehensible, but at the cost of atmosphere

I enjoyed another round of the adventures of this fabulous team. There is plenty of cool stuff in there, and I could actually follow the story this time. The graphics however, while crisp and clear, are also a bit lifeless, and the major somehow lost her mojo for me - even if she is an android.

Pretty fly

Some characters can be a bit manga-crincy as expected (especially the women), but it has stuff to make up for it: exciting space battles and weaponry, a well developed atmosphere, and very imaginative, strange and impressive (dare I say scary?) gauna monsters indeed.

Unbelievable

If it's based on a true story, I found it suspicious how the Taliban kept running into the line of fire, were unable to hit anything and how the Americans made perfect shots from galloping horses they never rode before. The quasi deep lectures from the tribe leader also annoyed me.

Touching and intimate parenthood story with a cool context

I was lured into this by Eva Green, space and the awesome trailer music (which shadows Ryuichi Sakamoto's slightly lazy soundtrack). But what is is mostly is a struggle of career, dreams and parenthood, and a pretty good one at that. But I still want a 'real' Eva Green space movie.

3.5

Arrogant empty shell

How the hell did they get such a big budget to make such bland, generic, lifeless movie? It radiates arrogance. The numerous 'emotional' scenes with cheesy minor piano chords fall flat completely because I didn't know or care who these people are!

Solid but with some windowdressing

Overall this was quite solid and featured good acting and atmospherics. But ultimately the superpowers and cool airdrop-robots started to feel as window dressing, because they didn't really seem to matter for the development of the story, and a slightly underwhelming crime story was what remained.
